Professional Teacher Development - PTD

The Background

The Aim

The political and economical development in Europe requires that EU citizens have a better knowledge of languages in order to have personal and professional contact with people with another mother tongue. In 1984 the EC stated: "One modern language in addition to the mother tongue should be studied in depth." According to this statement the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, is pursuing the aim to prepare the students for tomorrow's Europe by using English as the working language especially in mathematical and scientific teaching. It takes competence in English to communicate by the internet, to use video conferences to communicate across countries and continents.

The realisation of this aim requires the development of a new teacher training and further improvement. This process is already underway.

There is going to be a big group of teachers soon that should draw our attention: Many teachers finish their degrees but cannot find a job. PTD is designed to give these teachers the oppotunity to prepare themselves intensively to use English as working language so that they'll be able to teach their subjects in English. They will also gain extra qualifications which may be important for their further career, be it in our school system or in the private sector.

Teaching in an American Junior High or High School is not only a perfect training for ones pedagogical abilities, but also a personal enrichment. The collaboration with the teachers in those schools is intense and very helpful. It also brings Austrian culture close to students and teachers in Philadelphia.

New York has a shortage of teachers in science subjects. The PTD program is therefore of mutual benefit to Austria and Philadelphia.

If you are interested in teaching in Philadelphia, we invite you to
take a look at the procedures.
